Pre-conference workshop for doctoral researchers April 15-16, 2026, Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare, Helsinki (In English below)
CALL FOR PAPERS - DEADLINE 1.2.2026
Perheiden ja läheissuhteiden tutkimusseura PELS järjestää 15.–16.4.2026 väitöskirjatutkijoiden työpajan Helsingissä Terveyden ja hyvinvoinnin laitoksen Tilkanmäen kampuksella. Työpajassa väitöskirjatutkijat voivat tutustua muihin perheitä ja läheissuhteita tutkiviin väitöskirjatutkijoihin sekä esittää omaa tutkimustaan työpaperin ja posterin muodossa. Työpaja edeltää Perheiden ja läheissuhteiden tutkimuspäiviä, jotka järjestetään Helsingissä Kelan päätoimitalossa 16.–17.4.2026.
Työpajaan osallistuminen on maksutonta, eikä edellytä osallistumista Perheiden ja läheissuhteiden tutkimuspäiville. Työpajan järjestämisestä vastaa Perheiden ja läheissuhteiden tutkimusseura PELS yhdessä Terveyden ja hyvinvoinnin laitoksen kanssa, ja sitä sponsoroi Alli Paasikiven säätiö. Matkakustannuksiin voi hakea matkatukea PELSiltä mikäli osallistuu työpajan lisäksi myös Perheiden ja läheissuhteiden tutkimuspäiville.
Osallistujat voivat lähettää joko suomen- tai englanninkielisen työpaperin, joka kytkeytyy teemaltaan perheisiin ja/tai läheissuhteisiin. Työryhmätyöskentely tapahtuu englanniksi ja/tai suomeksi. Työpajassa papereita kommentoivat toiset väitöskirjatutkijat sekä perheitä ja läheissuhteita tutkivat senioritutkijat, jotka edustavat eri tieteenaloja ja erilaisia metodologisia lähestymistapoja. Lisäksi työpajassa järjestetään posterinäyttely, jossa on mahdollisuus harjoitella oman väitöskirjan esittelyä posterin muodossa ja myös tutustua muiden väitöskirjatutkijoiden tutkimuksiin.
Hae työpajaan 1.2.2026 mennessä
Työpajaan otetaan mukaan rajallinen määrä väitöskirjatutkijoita. Osallistujat valitaan abstraktien perusteella. Hakeaksesi työpajaan laadi lyhyt abstrakti tutkimukseesi pohjautuvasta työpaperista suomeksi tai englanniksi ja lähetä se 1.2.2026 mennessä työpajan koordinaattoreille: johanna.narvi@thl.fi ja aino.luotonen@uef.fi.

Tiivis kuvaus työpaperin sisällöstä (noin 200 sanaa)
Hyväksyttyjen osallistujien oletetaan tuottavan työpajaan korkeintaan 5000 sanan mittaisen työpaperin, joka voi olla mikä tahansa väitöskirjan osa, esimerkiksi artikkeliluonnos, monografian tai väitöskirjayhteenvedon luku tai tutkimussuunnitelma. Perustellusta syystä paperi voi olla pidempi, esimerkiksi jos kyseessä on lähes valmis artikkelikäsikirjoitus. Työpaperin tulee olla valmis jaettavaksi muille osallistujille 29.3.2026 mennessä.
Lisäksi osallistujat valmistelevat työpajaan posterin väitöstutkimuksestaan tai sen osasta. Posteria ei toimiteta etukäteen, vaan sen voi tuoda mukanaan työpajaan. Tarkemmat ohjeet työpaperien toimittamisesta, posterin tekemisestä ja työpajan järjestelyistä toimitetaan työpajaan hyväksytyille väitöskirjatutkijoille hyväksymiskirjeen yhteydessä 13.2.2026 mennessä. Samalla ilmoitetaan matkatuen myöntämisestä sitä hakeneille.
Matkatukea haettavissa
Perheiden ja läheissuhteiden tutkimusseura PELS voi Alli Paasikiven seuran sponsoroimana myöntää kiinteän 250 euron suuruisen tuen osallistumiseen noin 12 sellaiselle väitöskirjatutkijalle, joiden ei ole mahdollista saada tukea matka- ja majoituskuluihin muualta. Tuen saaminen edellyttää osallistumista sekä väitöskirjatutkijoiden työpajaan että Perheiden ja läheissuhteiden tutkimuspäiville. Tuen voi käyttää matkoihin, majoitukseen ja tutkimuspäivien osallistumismaksuun (70 euroa jatko-opiskelijoille). Tuki maksetaan työpajan ja tutkimuspäivien jälkeen.

Pre-conference workshop for doctoral researchers in connection with the 2026 Research Conference on Families and Personal Relationships
April 15–16, 2026 in Helsinki, Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare (Terveyden ja hyvinvoinnin laitos, Mannerheimintie 166A)
The Finnish Society for Research on Families and Personal Relationships PELS will organize a workshop for doctoral researchers on April 15–16, 2026 at the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare’s (THL) Tilkanmäki campus in Helsinki. The workshop provides doctoral researchers an opportunity to connect with others studying families and personal relationships and to present their on-going research in the form of a working paper and a poster. The workshop precedes the Families and Personal Relationships Research Conference (Perheiden ja läheissuhteiden tutkimuspäivät) which will take place at KELA main building in Helsinki on April 16–17, 2026.
Participation in the workshop is free of charge and does not require attendance at the conference. The workshop is organized by PELS in collaboration with the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare and is sponsored by the Alli Paasikivi Foundation. Travel grants from PELS may be available for those attending both the workshop and the conference.
Participants may submit a working paper in Finnish or English related to families and/or personal relationships. Workshop discussions will be in English and/or Finnish. Papers will be commented on by fellow doctoral researchers as well as senior researchers representing various disciplines and methodological approaches. In addition, the workshop will feature a poster session, providing an opportunity to practice presenting your dissertation in poster format and to learn about other doctoral researchers’ work.
Apply to the Workshop by February 1, 2026
A limited number of doctoral researchers will be accepted to the workshop. Participants will be selected based on abstracts. To apply, prepare a short abstract of your working paper based on your research (in Finnish or English) and send it by February 1, 2026 to the workshop coordinators: johanna.narvi@thl.fi and aino.luotonen@uef.fi.
The abstract should include:
Presenter’s name, affiliation, and university or work email address
Title of the presentation
A concise description of the working paper (approximately 200 words)
Accepted participants are expected to submit a working paper of up to 5,000 words for the workshop. The paper can be any part of the dissertation, such as a draft article, a chapter of a monograph or summary, or a research plan. For justified reasons, the paper may be longer (e.g., a nearly completed article manuscript). The working paper must be ready to share with other participants by March 29, 2026.
In addition, participants will prepare a poster about their dissertation or a part of it. The poster does not need to be submitted in advance; you can bring it to the workshop. Detailed instructions for submitting working papers, preparing posters, and practical arrangements will be provided to accepted participants in the acceptance letter by February 13, 2026. At the same time, applicants will be informed about the allocation of travel grants.
Travel Grants Available
The Finnish Society for Research on Families and Personal Relationships (PELS), sponsored by the Alli Paasikivi Foundation, can award a fixed travel grant of €250 to approximately 12 doctoral researchers who are unable to receive funding for travel and accommodation from other sources. Receiving the grant requires participation in both the doctoral workshop and the Research Conference on Families and Personal Relationships. The grant can be used for travel, accommodation, and the conference participation fee (€70 for doctoral students). The grant will be paid after the workshop and the conference.

Is it possible for you to apply for travel funding from your university, doctoral program, or another source?

Työpajaa sponsoroi Alli Paasikiven säätiö: tukea osallistumiseen haettavana!
Perheiden ja läheissuhteiden tutkimuspäivät 2024 käynnistyvät 24.-25.4.2024 Itä-Suomen yliopiston Kuopion kampuksella järjestettävällä työpajalla, jossa väitöskirjatutkijat voivat tutustua muihin perheitä ja läheissuhteita tutkiviin väitöskirjatutkijoihin sekä esittää omaa tutkimustaan työpaperin muodossa. Työpaja päättyy torstaina 25.4. ennen tutkimuspäivien ohjelman alkamista.
Osallistujat voivat lähettää joko englanninkielisen tai suomenkielisen työpaperin. Työryhmätyöskentely tapahtuu englanniksi ja suomeksi. Työpaperin aihe on vapaa ja se voi keskittyä työpajan teeman mukaisesti tutkimusmetodologisiin kysymyksiin tai muuhun väitöskirjan osa-alueeseen. Työpajassa papereita kommentoivat toiset väitöskirjatutkijat sekä perheitä ja läheissuhteita tutkivat senioritutkijat, jotka edustavat eri tieteenaloja ja erilaisia metodologisia lähestymistapoja.
Työpajaan osallistuminen on ilmaista, eikä edellytä osallistumista Perheiden ja läheissuhteiden tutkimuspäiville. Esittely: Dr. Shruti Chaudhry, Chancellor’s Fellow in sociology, School of Social and Political Science, University of Edinburgh
Shruti Chaudhryn tutkimusintresseihin kuuluvat perhe- ja läheissuhteet, avioliitto, siirtolaisuus, ikääntyminen ja elämänkaari, rotu ja etnisyys, hoiva sekä yhteiskunnallinen muutos. Hän on muun muassa tehnyt vertailevaa etnografista tutkimusta avioitumiseen liittyvästä naisten muuttoliikkeestä Pohjois-Intian maaseudulla sekä tutkinut eteläaasialaistaustaisten ikääntyvien elämää ja läheissuhteita Skotlannissa.

Pre-conference workshop for doctoral researchers: Multiple methodological approaches to families and close relationships
The workshop is sponsored by The Alli Paasikivi Foundation: you can apply for a travel grant!
A pre-conference workshop prior to the Families and Personal Relationships Research Conference will be organized 24-25 April 2024 at the University of Eastern Finland, Kuopio campus. The workshop provides doctoral researchers an opportunity to get to know other doctoral researchers studying themes related to families and personal relationships, and to present their on-going research with a paper. In the workshop, the papers will be discussed among doctoral researchers, and senior researchers who represent different fields and have different methodological expertise.
The participants can send a paper in either English or Finnish. Workshop discussions are in English and in Finnish. The paper can be of any theme related to research on families and personal relationships, and it can be related to the main theme of the workshop, methodology, or any other part of the doctoral dissertation.
Participation in the workshop is free and does not require participation in the conference. The workshop is organized by the Finnish Society on Research on Families and Personal Relationships (PELS) in collaboration with the University of Eastern Finland. It is sponsored by The Alli Paasikivi Foundation. The coordinators of the workshop are Petteri Eerola (JYU), Aino Luotonen (UEF), and Rosi Enroos (TUNI).
The Finnish Society on Research on Families and Personal Relationships (PELS), sponsored by Alli Paasikivi Foundation, will award travel grants of 250 euros to max. 12 doctoral researchers who do not have a possibility to get travel expenses paid by other sources. In order to get a travel grant, the doctoral researcher must participante to the pre-conference workshop and the Finnish Family and Personal Relationships Research Conference. The grant can be used for travel and accommodation costs and to the conference fee (70 euros for doctoral students). The grant will be paid after the conference.

Dr. Shruti Chaudhry is a Chancellor’s Fellow in sociology at the School of Social and Political Science at the University of Edinburgh. Her research interests include family and intimate relationships, marriage, migration, aging and life-course, race and ethnicity, care, and social change. She has conducted for example comparative ethnographic research in rural north India among women who migrate for marriage and studied relational lives of older adults of South Asian heritage in Scotland.

For the workshop, each participant is asked to send a paper of maximum length of 5000 words, based on for example research plan of the doctoral dissertation, or an article draft or a chapter that is part of the dissertation. The papers will be shared among the workshop participants and senior researchers on 15 April 2024. Further instructions concerning sending the paper and practicalities of the workshop will be sent to the participants together with the approval letter, as well as decision on the travel grant.
